Ron La Progresiva 13

In the past we did not see so many Cuban rums probably due to difficult political situation, but times are changing and there are more rums entering onto the market place. Ron La Progresiva 13 is an exception example of just how good Cuban rum is.

Tasting notes: An intense aroma ripe banana and caramel, drying with bitter orange peeking out in the background the pallet is aggressive to start with rich caramel and apple, dry with a stimulating prickly heat and allspice the finish is long once the chest has heated up the apple becomes the dominant finish with lots of dry oak and a little smoke.

Serving suggestions: I made a wonderful old fashioned with some chocolate bitters and maple syrup, but this rum is perfect for sipping neat across ice maybe with a twist of orange or a sprig of mint.

The rum is a blend of the very best rums Cuba has to offer which were hand picked by a team of master blenders who focused on producing a rum that is perfect for sipping. It has a very low sugar content typical of Cuban rum which provides the dryness which is assisted by the rum being all molasses column still and having a higher ABV than is usual.

Cuba has a great history of rum and cocktails culture, this was assisted by the American government when they introduced prohibition in to the states, the end result was for those that could afford it they travelled to Cuba to quench their thirst, one of Fidell Castro’s fishing partners, Ernest Hemingway was famous for his quote “My mojito in La Bodeguita, my daiquiri in El Floridita.” The Cuban rum industry was so large that that Bacardi became so big they were the worlds first multinational company and still dominate rum sales even if they have left their home land Cuba and now produce their rum in Puerto Rico
