Plantation 5 year Barbados Rum

£28.00

Plantation 5 Year is a rum hailing from Barbados which history shows is the birth place of rum. As is mostly the case with Plantation the rum is first aged for 3 – 4 years in the country of origin, in this case Barbados and the shipped to France and aged for another 1 – 2 years in oak barrels that have been used to age Pierre Ferrand cognac then blending takes place where only the best rums from each stage of the journey are used this double ageing always has an incredible effect upon the rum and creates a huge complexity and originality.

Tasting notes: There is plenty of aroma to take in at first it’s like walking to cake shop with vanilla and caramel and toasted marshmallow as well as some baking spice and topical notes of pineapple and piped tobacco. The palate is sweet but with a little bitterness to it like ripe toasted pineapple and just a little gassiness the spices are cinnamon and nutmeg and over all there is a creaminess that gives way to chocolate and leather.

Serving suggestions: A good rum for use in any tropical style cocktails, I’ve just tried it in a Pina Colada and it was very good, and as you would expect it is perfect with ginger beer as well as coke. As a sipper it is good especially as an aperitif to get the juices flowing in preparation for your dinner.

It is hard to believe that quality of this rum at this price after sipping a a glass it far out rates it’s price comparison. The use of double ageing gives a nice mouth feel to the rum and although the first hit is quite fiery it calms down and become very elegant and most definitely enjoyable.
